Easton didn’t want to be awake at six in the morning, but his cell phone had kept ringing, so eventually, he’d given up and answered it. And now he was up in the cool air, crossing the street toward Billy’s. He could see Billy now, standing next to a pickup truck.

There was another figure sitting on the hood, resting his back against the glass. He was clearly asleep, and he was clearly Chance.

“Last time I buy drinks,” Easton grumbled, stalking over.

“So, funny thing, last night when I closed up, there wasn’t a man sleeping on my truck,” said Billy. “Or in my truck.”

He motioned toward the back. Stretched out in the bed of it was Forzin. Easton sighed, and shook his head. He didn’t want to think of how many toasts the man must have made to get this wasted.

“His wife’s gonna kill him,” Easton said.

“Yeah, I’m thinkin’ she will,” Billy said, holding back a chuckle.

“So how much longer were they drinking? After I’d gone?” asked Easton.

“Right up till closing. Chance staring talking ’bout how between ‘running from dinosaurs’ and ‘training for the new world,’ he hadn’t had a chance for a ‘good drunk’ in three and a half years. Not sure entirely what he was talking about, but I figured it was just one of the thousand things I hear that I’m not actually supposed to know about,” Billy explained.

“Yeah, it is,” Easton said. “Bet you’ll have a lot of tales to tell once they start declassifying all this.”

“Yep. Thinkin’ about putting together a book. But first I gotta get this truck to the next town over and pick up a shipment of sausages that were supposed to come in yesterday. And seeing how you’re all good customers, I figured if I did the honors, they’d just get mad at me. Mad customers are bad for business,” Billy said.

“You’re the only game in town, Bill. I think they’d get over it,” Easton said dryly.

“Not a risk I can take. Restaurant business is tough.”

“All right, cover your ears, Billy,” Easton said. He paused, then cleared his throat.

“On your damn feet, Soldier!” he roared.

Chance jolted awake, then slipped, rolling sideways off the car. He fell to the street, his body landing loosely due to the amount of booze in his system. He scrambled to his feet, swaying mightily the whole way up, grabbing the truck for support.

“Huh?” came Forzin’s voice from the back. He sat up momentarily, looked around blearily, then slumped back down.

“Wha-wha is happening? Wh-where am I?” Chance mumbled. “Why am I outside?”

“Well, you two apparently had quite the night after I left,” Easton said.

“I did?” Chance said, trying to shake his head clear. “I-I don’t even remember you leaving.”

“Yeah, so much for not overdoing it,” Easton admonished.

“Uh, s-sorry, sir. I-I don’t know what came over me.”

Easton paused, thinking for a moment, then turned back to Billy.

“Breck isn’t in there too, is he?” Easton asked. If anybody could get a person to overdo it . . .

“Naw. He left with Katarina an hour before closing,” Billy said.
